Hoja de Ruta

President Barack Obama, presented a very clear plan to follow in the last two years of his presidency and clearly warned his opponents that he will do what he believes is right for our nation. The speech was concise and precise, highlighting the progress of the economy, the reduced dependence on imported oil, the end of the wars, the creation of new opportunities, lower taxes for the middle class and raising those with higher incomes, relations with Cuba, immigration and details such as higher education and the support for child care.

The Holiday Season

The Christmas season brings the spirit of reconciliation, peace and love that binds families and lets them put aside conflicts and divisions that sometimes emerge from our frenzied daily lives. Christianity teaches us that Christ was sent by God to live close to humanity and teach mankind love and the brotherhood, as we are all children of one father: God.

Rest in peace

Early in life we learn that we should pay more attention to the present. Today is the gift that has been given to us, because tomorrow is uncertain and guarantees nothing to us. It has been just 12 months since we published the farewell of our editor, Maria D’Adamo, to her readers, colleagues and advertisers that have been supporting us for more than 12 years. Maria died unexpectedly Dec. 18. Before we have to say goodbye to her, let us recall some of her words in her last column with Eco Latino Magazine:

The Vow

It is the right and duty of every citizen. At press time, a dogfight between the Democratic candidate for governor of Florida Charlie Crist and current Gov. Rick Scott in the Republican party arose. Perhaps, the scoop would be to predict the winner of the November 4 elections, but for the Hispanic community, should be the end of absenteeism and indifference to the democratic processes that cost so much effort to the founders of this great nation.

SAINT ACCOMPLICE

The recent canonization of Pope John Paul II was an insult to the countless people who have been sexually abused by Catholic priests. During his papacy, from 1978-2005, this newly anointed “saint” remained silent as these predators targeted children in parishes around the world.

Miracles, monsters, and the pope

I don’t believe in miracles. I’ve always thought that they only take place in religious people’s imaginations. But my views aren’t important here: What matters is that Floribeth Mora believes in miracles. Mora, 50, of Costa Rica, was diagnosed in 2011 with a brain aneurysm that could have led to paralysis or death. Mora said that after receiving the grim diagnosis, she went home and prayed that Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005, would heal her. Then she went to sleep. When she awoke, she said she heard John Paul’s voice telling her: “Stand up. Don’t be afraid.”
