"Shakespeare in the Park" comes to Atlantic Beach

Local audiences, especially those of Latino heritage, will enjoy the opportunity to sing-a-long to some well-known Spanish folk tunes such as Cielito Lindo and Mañanitas in the upcoming Shakespeare-in-the-Park event, to be held on April 20 and 21, at 8 p.m., at Russell Park in Atlantic Beach. The event is produced thanks to a partnership between the University of North Florida (UNF) Department of English and the City of Atlantic Beach.

Considering that the Peruvian Community continues growing in the city of Jacksonville, Fl. Club de Peruanos en Jacksonville Florida was founded on December 8th 2011 with the idea of helping those in need. Since our organization was established, we have endeavored to provide help where the need is greatest. The current directors of our Organization decided to create Club de Peruanos en Jacksonville Florida to give everyone who is interested, the opportunity to help those In need. Helping the community grow to become a permanent part of the lives of our members.

Florida U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio will headline Republican-led conference

The Hispanic Leadership Network's two-day conference in Miami will be co-chaired by former Gov. Jeb Bush and U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. It begins Jan. 27 -- just in time for the state's Jan. 31 GOP primary. The network is also co-hosting the presidential debate in Jacksonville with CNN and the Florida GOP. The debate will also air on CNN en Espanol. Rubio has previously sent video messages, but this will be his first visit to the conference. It comes as the party's candidates are wooing Florida's influential Cuban-American and Puerto Rican voters.

MAYOR ANNOUNCES RIVER ACCESS INITIATIVE

Dec. 20, 2011 – Mayor Alvin Brown led the way as kayakers and paddle-boarders took to the river Tuesday morning. A group of more than two dozen people paddled out as part of the mayor's announcement that the city was increasing the number of river access points for small watercraft. Jacksonville has 125 square miles of navigable waterways. The mayor said those waterways create a valuable engine for recreation and tourism.

Dec. 22, 2011 – Mayor Alvin Brown helped the Salvation Army raise more than $500 this year while volunteering to ring the bell at three Red Kettle stations throughout Jacksonville. “The holidays are a time to reflect not just on what we have, but how we can help others in need,” said the mayor. “In our troubled economy, we must all work together to make a difference. It was an honor to join the ranks of so many other volunteers in this great city who share that vision.” The annual Red Kettle Campaign traces its history to 1891 and has become a mainstay for holiday volunteer efforts.
